International bodies rethink their role
Article Abstract:
The arrival of the 21st century is set to be a turning point for international standardization. Several standards organizations are assessing their structures to see if they meet the requirements of the rapidly changing global economy. At the same time, these organizations are reviewing relationships with industrial partners, governments and other standards organizations. Within this climate, the American National Standards Institute faces an uncertain future as it struggles for funding and for a clear identity.

58 multinationals question ISO 9000 registration; NIST seeks standards summit
Article Abstract:
Fifty-eight multinational companies from the US and Europe met on Apr 7 and 8, 1998 under the guidance of the International Committee on Standards and Conformity Assessment (ICSCA). The firms called for self-declaration to ISO 9000 certification by 2005 and proposed an end to management system standards supported by third-party registration schemes. Some of the multinational companies that met under ICSCA include Siemens AG, German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers Assn and ABB.
