Just for the gel of it

Article Abstract:

Gel inks offer much flexibility, wash off skin, and double manufacturers' profits, but fill one-eighth as many pages as a standard ballpoint pen. They are ecologically friendly, being 80% water, unlike ballpoint inks, which are solvent-based, use pigments in a water-soluble polymer matrix, and so are opaque, unlike most inks, which use dyes. The US Internal Revenue Service and the Secret Service analyze ink and are expected to have problems classifying these inks. The gel inks cannot be identified by dye combinations using thin-layer chromatography. Illumination with IR and UV radiation may be useful. Pen types are considered.
