Article Abstract:
A good operating system's file system organizes data on disks so that files are minimally interleaved, and retrieving a file requires little disk work. There are tradeoffs between a user's view of files and the computer's routing or conversion of data. Examples of the differences in real and apparent routines are found in the Teletypewriter Exchange (TWX) network and on Ethernet's broadcast packet-switching network.
