Medical electronics
Article Abstract:
Medical electronics advances include an optical technique to spot early signs of joint disease, microwave heating to correct vision problems, superconducting coils to improve magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and use of electromagnetic fields to stimulate bone growth. Osteoarthritis can be treated if diagnosed early, and with optical coherence tomography (OCT) infrared wavelengths are used to image cartilage. For the cornea, microwave thermokeratoplasty (MTK) is still experimental, but it may be used to shrink collagen that provides structural support in the central layer of the cornea to tighten and reform the optical zone with heat. Photorefractive keratectomy and radial thermokeratoplasty are also being researched. Sodium sensing in MRI has potential advantages, and with a superconducting coil to receive magnetic fields from sodium nuclei it may turn out to be sufficient in terms of signal-to-noise ratio. Companies discussed include Conductus, Magnetic Imaging Technology, OrthoLogic, and Crump Industrials Group.

Messenger arrives at mercury: satellite to zip by sunburned planet next month
Article Abstract:
NASA's Messenger space probe is expected to fly by Mercury on January 14, 2008 coming as close as 200 kms from the planet. The Messenger is intended to make a 7.9 billion km journey that will fly it around the sun 15 times to observe both Venus and Mercury. Highly reflective sunshades protect the Messenger's wiring which could come as close as 46 million kms near the sun.
