Microelectronics and computers
Article Abstract:
The European Communities face a struggle to retain or expand their share of the European integrated circuits and computer markets. Japanese and US firms have led in technology and in the European market for the last two decades. But European computer companies are starting to plan for the opportunities and challenges that will occur when the European market integrates. The variety of languages spoken in Europe is an important factor in the software business. Top US vendors have European subsidiaries, branch offices and research and development centers to enable them to offer documentation and software support in the local language. It is expected that European companies will take an open systems approach, emphasizing Unix. The EC has drafted a directive on software copyright that permits computer makers to copyright the coding, but not the ideas, logic, or algorithm, to hook the operating system with the hardware. The directive also proposes a ban on reverse-engineering programs.

Keeping the phone lines open
Article Abstract:
Risk analysis on the US telephone network is not practical due to the vastness of the network and dependence of US society on telecommunications. Detailed mathematical analysis on a network so large has not been done. Mathematical analysis on key components such as switching systems has been performed by AT & T however. Exhaustive analysis became unnecessary in the late 1960s due to the replacement of discrete components with integrated circuits. At that time the reliability of switching systems improved. Analysis was nonetheless done on repeater/amplifiers used in transoceanic cables and other components. Currently, disasters and other emergencies are handled by the company that operates the equipment being affected.

The sound of music: Bruno Putzeys
Article Abstract:
Bruno Putzeys job as a designer of amplifiers and other audio electronics allows him listen to a lot of music and to travel widely to conferences and recording studios. The growing popularity of Class-D audio amplifiers is largely due to Putzeys work in the technology as an employee of Philips. Putzey later worked for Hypex Electronics and Grimm audio.
