Mixing signals & voltages on chip
Article Abstract:
Integration of 3-Volt and 5-Volt analog and digital circuitry involves complications in simulation processes. Additional cells must be added to smooth the interface between the 5-Volt and 3-Volt sections. Noise sensitivity is a concern; the amplitude of a few hundred millivolts common in circuitry can interfere with noise sensitive analog circuits placed next to digital sections. Immunity can be obtained by including differential-mode circuits, power/ground bus isolation and shield-building in mixed-signal designs. The combination of local area network communications with wide area communications in modems and facsimile machines began at the board level and will eventually reside on a single chip. Several design issues must be solved before innovative applications in automotive, medical, communications and multimedia can be produced.

Electrical engineers are taming up with gene jockeys and drug developers to invent new drug-delivery systems that connect electronics and semiconductors to biotechnology. Two approaches are tested for feasibility, one features implantable microchips dotted with tiny drug reservoirs that pop open at the touch of a wireless telemetry button, and other relies on injections of nanometer-scale beads of semiconductors, termed quantum dots, that exploit the energy of electrons to kill cancer cells selectively.
