Barter in Russia
Article Abstract:
Barter appears to have become dominant among Russian transaction methods, accounting for more than 50% of industrial sales in 1998, compared with less than 20% in 1995. Promissory notes and other money surrogates may be used as well as goods being exchanged. Lack of bank finance and tight fiscal policy are among the reasons for the growth of barter. Liquidity issues appear a stronger motive for firms involved in barter, rather than tax avoidance. Barter has led to economic distortions.
