Pens write new standards for moulding quality: luxury pens of unnerving beauty are being manufactured by a noval process that may change the way companies designt he aesthetic qualities of polymer products

Article Abstract:

A new manufacturing technology can produce aesthetic polymer components incoprorating detailed graphics and offering high levels of quality and strength. Applications could include limited edition jewellery and the interior trim of luxury vehicles. It is currently being used to produce a pen based on a marble design first produced in the 1920s. It uses marbled acrylic into which jagged V-shaped grooves are cut. The groove tracks are of complex shape which ensures that each pen has a unique pattern.

Changing the rules of a 'no win' game

Article Abstract:

The Rubber and Plastics Research Association (RAPRA) is a British centre of excellence in the field of engineering plastics and has collated a huge amount of knowledge and data, including failure diagnosis statistics on some 5,000 plastics products. The association is in the process of organising the data into small packages of low cost information that can be accessed by designers via either CDs or online databases. The service is a cost effective alternative to consultancy.
