Real R&D spending increase forecast for 1998

Investment in R&D in the US is expected to increase significantly in 1998. Based on an annual forecast by Battelle and R&D Magazine, R&D spending for 1998 could surpass $215 billion. The federal government will contribute an estimated $62.9 billion for R&D programs, while the private sector will spend $143 billion. Universities and other nonprofit organizations, on the other hand, will invest around $10.2 billion. Leading fields for R&D spending in 1998 include pharmaceuticals, microelectronics, non-electrical machinery and motor vehicles.

Industrial R&D efforts in 1998 are forecast to be positive. R&D budgets are anticipated to increase by almost 5% over 1997 levels while top management is predicted to provide a strong commitment to cooperative research. Moreover, companies are expecting a 3.1% increase in R&D intensity and a 20% rise in professional staffing. Some of the industries anticipated to increase R&D efforts include consumer products, computers, electronics, paper and allied products, and industrial machinery.
