Selecting pressure transmitters for safety instrumented systems

Article Abstract:

Techniques that can be used to improve the safety and reliability of field measurements using the sensor portion of a safety-instrumented systems are discussed. Differential pressure transmitters include a novel design called safety-rated transmitter. Microprocessor-based smart transmitters can be modified using high diagnostics and fail-safe circuitry. This capability enables it to inputto a safety programmable-logic-controller and the system can be programmed to respond appropriately to transmitter failure.

Standards simplify communications for batch control

Article Abstract:

Integration problems among various automation systems in the chemical process industries are being resolved by the S88 and S95 standards. However, results have been slow in coming. Batch-control system users hope that the S95 standard will be as effective as the S88 standards in helping them focus on their core competencies. One effect of recipe standardization is the increase in outsourcing production of batch products.

Design made easy

Article Abstract:

Engineers employed by chemical process industries usually rely on equipment-sizing and other related software to design simple plant equipment such as cooling towers and heat exchangers and valves. In complex projects such as those concerning front-end plant or fluid-flow system design, engineers turn to a more sophiticated software that fall under the the category of computational fluid dynamics.
