Shutting out crime?: retailers need to protect their property but planners want to avoid the growing 'Bronx syndrome'

Article Abstract:

Several high streets and conservation areas are strictly controlled and have been able to avoid the 'Bronx syndrome', but other areas have to resort to solid steel shutters because the threat of crime is simply too great. Government advice favours attractive alternatives to solid roller shutters which can give an area a dead appearance and even contribute to a hostile atmosphere. Alterntives include mounted timber panels eliminating the need for a roller compartment, perforated steel, punched aluminium and clear polycarbonate.

New agendas for the aged

Article Abstract:

The housing of the over-60s will become a key issue as the number of elderly people in the UK continues to rise. There is a clear need for more accommodation for this age group, and this will present planners with some sensitive issues. Sheltered housing is enjoying a revival, and offers a viable alternative to nursing home care for people who require only partial supervision.
