Simulation models of ecological economics developed with energy language methods
Article Abstract:
The energy-systems language method of modelling and simulation, because of its energy constrained rules, is a means for transferring homologous concepts between levels of the hierarchies of nature. Mathematics of self-organization may justify 'emulation' as the simulation of systems overview without details. Here, these methods are applied to the new fields of 'ecological economics' and 'ecological engineering.' Since the vitality of national economies depends on the symbiotic coupling of environmental resources and human economic behavior, the energy language is adapted to develop overview models of nations relevant to public policies. An overview model of a developing nation is given as an example with simulations for alternative policies. Maximum economic vitality was obtained with trade for external resources, but ultimate economic carrying capacity and standard of living was determined by indigenous resources, optimum utilization and absence of foreign debt. Dynamic and control behavior of multicomponent distillation columns
Article Abstract:
A general purpose digital simulator that can be used for studying either the transient response or control behavior of multicomponent tray distillation columns has been developed. The DYCONDIST simulator, written in FORTRAN 77, utilizes a column model that solves the coupled nonlinear material and energy balance equations for each stage. Control performance of any column is analyzed by the user deciding upon a control strategy and then invoking one or more of the existing control algorithms or employing a user-written control algorithm. Features of the simulator are described and its use is illustrated for studying the open loop (dynamic) behavior and control behavior of a 29 tray depropanizer.
