Software
Article Abstract:
Two Unix standards have emerged, one from AT&T and another from the Open Software Foundation (OSF), a group consisting of IBM, Digital Equipment Corp, Hewlett-Packard, Apollo Computer, Honeywell Bull, Siemens, and Nixdorf Computer. Each Unix will have a separate standard user interface to make it more user friendly. NeXT Computing System has brought the Mach operating system, a Unix clone which operates 20 to 30 percent faster, to the market. Non-Unix-based versions of Mach are being developed for personal computers. The Parallel Computing Forum is standardizing Fortran practices for the parallel computing industry. Compilers that increase processing speed as additional processors are added to supercomputers were introduced by Ardent Computer Corp and Convex Computer Corp. Only six percent of professionals in engineering, defense, and system integration fields in 1987 used computer-aided software engineering tools.

PC upgrade: better graphics and sound
Article Abstract:
The redesign of the Apple II computer, resulting in the Apple IIGS, focused on two primary goals. The first and most important challenge was to keep the existing Apple II architecture. This allows the more than 10,000 existing Apple II software programs to run on the new computer. The second goal was to enhance the performance specifications of the old machine. A faster microprocessor, expanded memory, and enhanced graphics and sound (GS) are features of the upgraded Apple.
