Article Abstract:

Several highly-educated Taiwanese are returning to their countries to spearhead the country's research and development efforts. The Taiwanese National Science Council and National Youth Commission's statistics showed that around 23,000 Chinese nationals went back to their homelands from 1990 to Sep. 1994, including renowned Nobel awardee Yuan Tseh Lee. Researchers such as Lee have made a difficult decision to return due to family considerations. However, Lee hopes that the Taiwanese government will provide housing and excellent education to the returnees' children.

Korea's hopes of catching up in biotechnology fade as financial woes tame ambitious R&D investment plans

Article Abstract:

South Korea's plans to boost its R&D efforts in biotechnology have been dampened by the financial crisis in the country. The project, called Biotech 2000, was launched in 1994 to enable South Korea to catch up with other industrialized nations in the field of biotechnology by the year 2007. Seven government agencies are involved in research related to biomedical engineering, breeding of biological resources, genome analysis, cell culture and basic life sciences.

Korean electronic giant moves into medicine

Article Abstract:

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd is reportedly planning to enter the pharmaceutical and biotechnology businesses. The $62 billion Korean electronics company opened the Samsung Medical Center in Seoul during 1994 and has been investing heavily in medical research. The hospital features a biomedical research center which conducts basic research in biomedical engineering, immunology and molecular biology.
