Technology in action; Chicago lighting facelift boosts illumination, reduces energy and increases safety
Article Abstract:
The Chicago Park District upgraded lighting at parks and facilities under an eight-month $15-million project, which principally replaced mercury vapor lamps with high-pressure sodium lamps. Interior lighting in more than 200 field houses were upgraded under the first stage of the project, which was accomplished at the cost of $4 million. The second stage involved the sodium lamps, which were utilized for walkways in 160 outdoor parks. The project enhanced illumination levels by 10% to 15% while cutting on energy use at the same time. Fixture renovations also caused better light distribution.

Fire network: not run of the mill
Article Abstract:
Union Camp Corporation centralizes fire-alarm monitoring system at its industrial complex in Savannah, GA, with the aid of an intelligent, peer-to-peer networked infrastructure. The new infrastructure enhances flexibility, is more forging than previous system and boosts troubleshooting, according to mill fire inspector Mike Smith. These advantages are particularly important for Union Camp's Savannah complex, which supports three distinct manufacturing operations: a chemical plant, a converting factory and a pulp and paper mill.
