The Building Blocks: Computer Architecture
Article Abstract:
Fifth-generation computers will be high-speed, parallel or concurrent machines for performing many operations at once. With these multiple-processor architectures, special issues include control, granularity, communication, topology and task allocation. Control-driven machines have a single source of instructions that are passed to many parallel processors. An example, the Non-Von-1 Machine, is a tree of one million processors. Data-driven processing is another approach that allows processors to perform instructions when data becomes available and does not use a central processor. The demand-driven machine processors carry out instructions when the results are needed elsewhere. It is likely that hybrids of these machine types will be the successful architecture. All three architectures are illustrated by diagrams and a table compares performances of the three designs.

Computer Simulation Aims at Saving Lives in Aircraft Fires
Article Abstract:
Researchers at the University of Notre Dame are using mathematical modeling techniques to examine aircraft fires. A computer program called Undsafe simulates fire spread and heat and smoke dispersion. Analysis can be used to determine aircraft fire safety and possibly fire-fighting strategies.
