The Deming of America

Article Abstract:

W. Edwards Demings was among a group of statisticians sent to Japan after World War II to assist in a Japanese census. During his stay he spoke to many Japanese businessmen and engineers about statistical quality and process control as a tool for achieving industrial recovery. The success of Japan prompted American industries to try to learn Deming's methods. Deming's philosophy calls on executives and organizations to become committed to service and customer satisfaction through optimization. He also believed in the value of maintaining harmony within the workforce for achieving competitiveness.

Beware of prophecies

Article Abstract:

CEOs have the burden of looking into future prospects for their companies without being drawn into negative or wrong conclusions. Two specific areas which they should consider are organizational structure and innovation. Some firms have a tendency to layoff people in an attempt to downsize and remain competitive. Instead, firms should consider innovations within the organization, as prospective individuals facing termination may function better in other work areas.

How does your approach compare with the "gurus"?

Article Abstract:

Several guidelines on how to implement expert quality control practices are provided. On one hand, the orientation of the quality control expert is technical although, on the other hand, there are also human factors to consider. Quality should be considered interms of compliance to engineering specifications and not unique interpretations. The primary goal of quality control is ultimately to surpass competition.
