The Simulation Council Newsletter
Article Abstract:
The masthead of the very first Simulation Council Newsletter, which came out on Friday, Nov 7, 1952, upset the Navy brass. The masthead's accompanying illustration strongly suggested that the Navy was wasting a lot of money through the inconclusive flight-testing of missiles, but that the Simulation Council's analog computer could provide better information through the simulation of flights. The Simulation Council later became the Society for Computer Simulation (SCS). The masthead was soon changed through the Navy's urging, and other things changed as well. For example, other Simulation Councils were established in the East, the Central States, the Midwest, the Southwest and Southeast, the Northwest and Canada, and these councils were eventually incorporated into Simulation Councils Inc. The councils were incorporated to help ward off financial liability in general and the personal liability of Simulation Council officers in particular.

How to chase people by telephone
Article Abstract:
Contacting all of the living ex-Chairmen and ex-Presidents of the Society for Computer Simulation (SCS) for the 40th anniversary of The Society for Computer Simulation International (SCSI) proved a problematic task. Not only were none of the former leaders' phone numbers listed, but they all had to be encouraged to contribute to Simulation's anniversary issue. However, all of them promised to contribute to the publication. The Historical Section of this issue consists of those contributions, notes taken at the Summer Computer Simulation Conference (SCSC)in Reno, notes taken at an SCSC session on the history of simulation, a history of Comdyna, a collection of computer nameplates, a flow chart showing the history and family trees of the key analog computer manufacturers and an article discussing the future of computers.

SCS in Europe - some highlights (and lowlights)
Article Abstract:
The first Simulation Councils Inc (SCi) in the United Kingdom was chartered in 1968 as the UKSC. UKSC was largely established as an affiliate of SCi, rather than as an independent organization, because UKSC's members believed it needed a strong publication, SIMULATION, to provide a focus for its membership, most of whom would not be present at regular meetings. UKSC's operating funds came from income generated at the meetings, which therefore had to be advertised to attract non-Society for Computer Simulation (SCS) members. One of the key lasting achievements of UKSC has been its triennial UK Simulation Conference, which was first held in 1975 in Bowness in the Lake District.
