The birth of SIMULATION
Article Abstract:
The publication SIMULATION grew out of the desire to expand John McLeod's 'Simulation Councils News letter' from its secondary position inside the magazine Instruments and Automation, to its own publication. The chance to do so came after Stanley Rogers met a Danish graphic artist named Hans Jorgensen, who determined all the costs for all the phases involved in producing a monthly. Jorgensen believed he could produce a 32-page monthly at a cost low enough that the Board of Directors would accept and that would make the project a success. A pleasing cover design for the magazine was developed and adequate advertising support was secured, but the Board ruled that only one issue could be published initially, as a test. The issue was a large success, with receipts paying for both that publication as well as the following issue. Jack Sherman was named the publication's Director of Publications, John McLeod was named Editor and Stanley Rogers became Publisher.

A large scale simulation model for analyzing the production of pipe valves and fittings
Article Abstract:
This paper describes a large-scale SLAM II-FORTRAN simulation model of a manufacturing plant that produces pipe valves and fittings. The model represents the functional areas of manufacturing (machining, heat treating, electropolishing, assembly, test and material movement) as well as the production planning and control system. The model allows for experimentation in a variety of areas, including production control, capacity planning, and layout design. Results of model experimentation indicate the advantages of conversion to a new single-floor facility over the existing multi-floor facility, as well as the advantages of a reduction in inventory levels for the plant.
