The paradox of serendipity and innovation

Article Abstract:

What an innovation is, degrees of innovation, and what role serendipity has in innovation are discussed relative to the chemical industry and to how far the new is from the old. A company may be driven by incrementalism, but should look for radical change if it wants to survive. The serendipity involved in the discovery of aspartame, an artificial sweetener, at G. D. Searle & Co. is discussed. Missing an opportunity in a DNA research project in which the amount of DNA kept doubling when the effort was made to destroy it is discussed. Sometimes an opportunity presents as a problem. Chance and fortuitous accidents are themes in the literature of creativity.
