Toxics and combustibles: designing gas-detection systems

Article Abstract:

Installation of a gas-detection system in chemical plants requires consideration of a number of site-dependent variables. The engineer should know which gases are targeted by the system. Potential danger points of the plant should be identified and divided into two categories, release points and receptor points. The engineer should establish the design goals appropriate for the plant following a hierarchy of severity. Also, the characteristics of the target gases should be identified and lastly, consider possible scenarios of potential release. Meanwhile, the designer should also consider accessibility, wiring and installation, external factors, environmental conditions, alarm levels, EMI and RFI, and exposure limits existing in the plant.

Pilot plants get on the fast track

Article Abstract:

There is a growing demand for pilot plants with capacities of over 1,000 gallons in the chemical industry. The trend was discussed during the national meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers held in Atlanta, GA, in Mar 2000. The cost-effectiveness of such plants, which are now increasingly being built for specific chemical process requirements, allows a manufacturer to have enough of the end product after going through an increasingly complex process of synthesis.

Industry volunteers toxicity data

Article Abstract:

Companies in the chemical process industries and their trade associations have volunteered to provide toxicity data on 2,800 high-volume industrial chemicals. The companies or consortia which will sponsor a particular chemical will provide whatever data are not available. The sponsorship is a key component of the High Production-Volume Challenge Program which aims to crate a more complete, systematic and readily-available toxicity database of industrial chemicals.
