Video inspection at Con Ed
Article Abstract:
Consolidated Edison Company of New York Inc's System and Transmission division uses various non-destructive testing techniques to diagnose and gain a better understanding of equipment degradation. One of its instruments, the VideoProbe 2000 Shadowprobe, enables the company to inspect feedwater heaters without having to interrupt operations, plan more comprehensive repairs and save thousands of dollars in maintenance costs. The Shadowprobe is a 50-foot videoborescope that eliminates image degradation by installing camera chips at its viewing tip. It permits clear visual inspections, enhances defect measurement and provides enough data to identify the cause of the failure.

New microwave inspection spots defects in steel products
Article Abstract:
A new non-destructive method of inspecting surface defects in steel products has been developed by John Jackson of Cambridge University and Graham Ward of British Steel PLC. The method focuses microwaves from a simple constant wave microwave Doppler unit at an angle of 45 degrees to the surface of a steel billet. The defect is detected through the backscattering of microwaves towards the unit. Cracks across the motion and gross reciprocation marks can be discovered using the method. Lengthwise cracks can be found if the unit is scanned across the steel product.
