'Walking' pistons hoist performance

Article Abstract:

Hydraulic motors can be made simpler, lighter and smaller by using two rotors linked by a set of bent 'walking pistons'. The rotors, which replace the usual swashplates, boost the power-to-weight ratio, efficiency, torque output and versatility of motors. The use of suitable valving also allows the motor to operate in two different modes, either low speed high torque or high speed low torque, while keeping the flow and pressure rate stable. The new technology was developed by Gards Inc., primarily for the marine industry, but Gards will also look at potential industrial and aerospace uses.

Microwaves mould a cleaner future

Article Abstract:

Engineering company, Sintex has developed a process for combining waste materials. Sinterform technology allows moulding of any combination of polymers with microwave radiation. Ceramic moulds are used. The process was first used for moulding packaging pallets. However, the potential for recycling is limitless. Experiments have shown Sinterform will successfully mould previously incompatible materials. It has proved cost-effective and environmentally sound.
