Defining the character of the countryside: the Countryside Character Map has immense potential but it must take care to steer clear of being too subjective

Article Abstract:

The Countryside Commission's Countryside Character Map attempts to define the countryside by amenity value and is seen by some as a step towards considering environmental capacity. Hampshire has already produced a version of the character map which covers the land area in an objective way, rather than subjective.

The community pub is being threatened with extinction. Villagers are fighting to safeguard their pub in Wotton in Surrey, England, where Bass Taverns wants to enlarge the car park and provide food facilities. The number of parishes where pubs do not provide food fell by 1-3% between 1991-1994.
