Another election behind us, more work ahead

Article Abstract:

The first two years of Clinton-Gore administration have been a disappointment in terms of environmental issues of Greenpeace. Clinton has been unsuccessful on policies of energy, public lands, nuclear power, forests and the WTI incinerator. The most significant environmental legislation of the 104th Congress has been the reauthorization of the Magnuson Fisheries Conservation and Management Act. This Act focuses on a balanced, participatory plan for concrete fisheries management, emphasizing on healthy ecosystems and communities.

Collapse of the whaling ban

Article Abstract:

Japan and Norway will propose the loosening of international whale protection rules at the June 1997 Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Pres. Bill Clinton must fulfill his 1992 campaign promise to reduce whaling and urge other CITES member countries to block the proposal of Japan and Norway. Failure to oppose the effort may result in the collapse of the International Whaling Commission's commercial whaling ban.
