Assessing a kerbside recycling scheme: a quantitative and willingness to pay case study

Article Abstract:

Socio-economic factors determined the willingness-to-pay (WTP) for a kerbside recycling scheme in the village of Hethersett, South Norfolk, UK. An analysis of the contingent valuation (CV) method that is used to determine the monetary values of environmental services found that the WTP depends on the economic conditions of the household and previous recycling patterns. An awareness of the scheme which was already in operation reduced the problems encountered with CV studies. The socioeconomic conditions of other areas are different and further implementation of the scheme appears improbable.

Communicating the greenhouse effect to the public: evaluation of a mass media campaign from a social dilemma perspective

Article Abstract:

Individuals are unwilling to sacrifice their comforts to protect the ecosystem when uncertainty abounds about the collective goal and others' contributions to it. A social dilemma perspective and a Pre-Post-Design study reveals that problem awareness is less important in bringing about behavioural change. The expectations about others' contributions are positively correlated to individuals' own contributions, while governmental measures have no direct impact on individual behaviour. Strategies for future environmental programmes are discussed.
