Canada, Mexico, U.S. may form world's richest free trade bloc
Article Abstract:
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), consolidated in 1992 between Canada, the US and Mexico, provides for the removal of trade tariffs between the three countries over a period of 15 years while limiting trade contacts with the rest of the world. This agreement, which is be implemented from Jan 1994, has evoked a mixed response. NAFTA is expected to stimulate economic growth and increase the market for farmers, but the Carribean Basin countries feel that they will be adversely affected. Farmers in Mexico and the US feel that competition from the other two countries will be disadvantageous to them.

Genetic freshness: the biotech tomato heads for market
Article Abstract:
Biotechnology scientists have developed a method for copying the DNA of tomato cells to produce a genetically-altered plant material which retains the freshness and the flavor of the original tomato. Calgene Inc of Davis, CA developed the Flavr Svr, the first bio-engineered food distributed commercially. The company explains that biotechnology has made it possible to ripen the tomato on the vine and extend its lifespan without refrigeration. The Food and Drug Administration stated that biotechnology products will have to meet the same regulations as those imposed on natural products.
