Costs of aggregation: shadow competition in a sit-and-wait predator

Article Abstract:

Research on the Namib Desert spider Seothyra henscheli is presented, focusing on its predatory behavior both singly and in clusters. Prey success was greater for the solitary rather than clustered spiders, a finding typified by shadow competition, or the impact of predator location on prey success relative to food source positioning.

Ignorant seed predators and factors affecting the seed survival of a tropical palm

Article Abstract:

Research on seed survival of the Astrocaryum mexicanum palm shows a causal network between low buried-seed recovery rates of ignorant foragers and palm seedling recruitment. Ignorant foragers are rodents which have not buried seeds in caches for future consumption, as opposed to scatter hoarding foragers which do.

Predators are rare even when they are small

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that population densities for predatory animals tend to be lower than those of non-predators, irrespective of body size. Data were obtained from studies of macroinvertebrate colonies in detrital microcosms.
