Costs of parasite resistance for female survival and parental care in a freshwater isopod

Article Abstract:

Parasite resistance in freshwater isopods was studied by exposing gravid female isopods from two lake populations to trophically transmitted acanthocephalan parasite. It was found that parasite exposure reduced the offspring size at birth in both susceptible and especially in resistant females, suggesting that resistant females had less resource to direct for parental care revealing costs of resistance in parental survival and parental care of offspring.

Ectoparasitic Argulus coregoni (Crustacea: Branchiura) hedge their bets - studies on egg hatching dynamics

Article Abstract:

A query that whether ectoparasitic Argulus coregoni egg hatchin pattern can be explained as a generically canalized individual trait, an instance of phenotypic plasticity or bet-hedging is focused. In order to clear this concept, egg clutches laid by individual A. coregoni females in early and late reproductive period of lice population were collected and clutches were randomized within 3 treatments.

Virulence of parasites in hosts under environmental stress: Experiments with anoxia and starvation

Article Abstract:

An examination on how anoxic conditions and starvation of the host affect virulence of two closely related trematode parasites are presented. It is concluded that mortality rate of clams was much higher under anoxia than under starvation, and that infection increased mortality rate under both types of host stress.
