Declining populations of freshwater pearl mussels (Margaritifera margaritifera) are burdened with heavy metals and DDT/DDE
Article Abstract:
An investigation into the possible causes of the decline of freshwater mussels, especially pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifea, is presented. Elevated levels of organochlorine insecticide DDT and its metabolite DDE along with other heavy metals were found in pearl mussels and both pollutants are known to potentially interfere with calcium homeostasis.

Hurricanes, coral reefs and rainforests: resistance, ruin and recovery in the Caribbean
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that coral reefs and rain forests use specific mechanisms to adapt to disruption produced by hurricanes, thus ensuring biodiversity within plant and animal communities. Alteration of coral reef and rain forest ecosystems by human activity, however, compromise the systems' ability to recover from hurricanes.

Replacing the Nile: are anthropogenic nutrients providing the fertility once brought to the Mediterranean by a great river?
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that human-produced changes in the chemical content of the Nile River have created a new fishery along Egypt's Mediterranean Sea coastline. The ecosystem of the new fishery, however, differs from the one that existed prior to completion of the Aswan High Dam in 1965.
