Designating a protected area at Karanambu Ranch, Rupununi Savannah, Guyana: resource management and indigenous communities
Article Abstract:
An agreement was reached in designating the Karanambu ranch in the northern Rupununi savannah, Guyana, as a protected area. So as not to infringe upon the Amerindian land rights associated with designated protected areas, interested parties agreed to establish a research station and small nature reserve for visiting scientist and ecotourists. Wildlife farming will provide employment and economic opportunities for the local communities.

Can forests "provide" water: widespread myth or scientific reality?
Article Abstract:
A distinct connection exists between water resources and land use in the dry tropics. Springs have been found to dry up due to changes in hydroclimatic and catchment properties brought on by deforestation. These include percolation opportunities and soil water-holding capacity. Though forests may not actually create water supplies, their presence contributes to water supply maintenance in dry tropic environments.
