Habitat change and protection of the red-crowned crane (Grus japonensis) in Yancheng Biosphere Reserve, China

Article Abstract:

The habitat of the red-crowned crane, Grus japonensis, has been significantly compromised by development in China's Yancheng Coastal Zone Biosphere Reserve. Human exploitation of tidal regions degraded the ecology of the habitat, and natural wetlands were altered over a period of time to form artificial wetlands. Since the crane is a threatened species, sustainable development processes are needed to ensure its survival.

Multipond systems: a sustainable way to control diffuse phosphorus pollution

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on China's centuries-old method of using multipond systems, or constructed wetlands, to mitigate the environmental impact of phosphorus pollution, a common contaminant in agricultural runoff. The system reduces runoff velocity, recycles valuable nutrients and prevents pollution of downstream lakes.
