Effect of a glyphosate (N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine) application to control Eichhornia crassipes mart. on fish composition and abundance in Abiala creek, Niger Delta, Nigeria
Article Abstract:
Glyphosate can be successfully applied as a chemical control agent to control water hyacinth. The application of glyphosate in Abiala creek in Delta State, Nigeria, killed mats of water hyacinth in the treated plots within seven days of treatment. There was a substantial increase in fish population in the glyphosate-treated plots while untreated plots had low fish catch. Juveniles and immature adult fish in the treated plots of the creek indicate the restoration of water quality within 28 days of treatment.

Responding to pressure on local natural resources: The story of three villages in south-eastern Nigeria
Article Abstract:
Development professionals are moving towards a greater reliance on the innovative ability and indigenous knowledge of local people to address problems caused by changing environmental conditions. A model to predict community responses to pressure on local natural resources and data from three villages in south-eastern Nigeria, were used to document the way people react and adapt to change. Communities were usually able to develop new resource management and agricultural systems in time.

The precautionary principle for environmental management: A defensive-expenditure application
Article Abstract:
The Precautionary Principle for environmental management emerged as a response to the need for an efficient way of dealing with risks and uncertainties in environmental management. It is argued that the Principle should be applied when both the probability and value of irreversible damage are unknown, permitting application via a defensive-expenditure approach.
