Initiation and maintenance of degraded landscape in the Sinamatella area of Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

Article Abstract:

An aerial photographic analysis was used to study soil erosion levels in the Sinamatella area of the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. The study area was the Madumabisa mudstones in Colophoospermum mopane woodland. Results revealed that 891 ha, which is about a quarter of the study area, were eroded and most of the degraded areas are near the hilltops, which were formerly settlement areas. These results indicate that high levels of erosion are associated with increased human activity and mismanagement.

Tree loss in the Gonarezhou National Park (Zimbabwe) between 1970 and 1983

Article Abstract:

Phytopanoramas used to study tree population in the Gonarezhou National Park, Zimbawe, showed that the population declined within 13 years. A relationship between mortality rate and temporal changes in elephant density was observed. Elephant population density, fire and drought were assumed to be the main factors that influence tree loss. Other factors that can influence park conditions were also discussed.

Decline of the mountain acacia, Brachystegia glaucescens in Gonarezhou National park, southeast Zimbabwe

Article Abstract:

Studies conducted in Zimbabwe's Gonarezhou National Park show that fire damage and elephant browsing are the primary factors in mountain acacia decline. Drought, erosion, and scrubland encroachment are contributing factors that are directly or indirectly linked to fire and herbivory pressures.
