International Conference on Pesticide Use in Developing Countries: impact on environment and health, San Jose, Costa Rica, 23-27 February 1998
Article Abstract:
Important health and environmental goals were established at the International Conference on Pesticide Use in Developing Countries. Held in Feb 1998, the conference targeted economic issues, risk management, training and control as crucial components of responsible pesticide policy. Reducing pesticide usage is vital to prevent environmental degradation and health hazards, which can create economic problems through escalated health costs and loss of natural resources.

Trends in nitrate concentrations and determination of its origin using stable isotopes ([18.sup.O] and [15.sup.N]) in groundwater of the Western Central Valley, Costa Rica
Article Abstract:
Long-term trends in nitrate concentrations were evaluated and the origin of nitrate was identified using stable isotopes in the aquifers of the western Central Valley, Costa Rica whose residents depend on groundwater for their daily needs. The findings indicated that groundwater management in the area was not sustainable and the lack of proper sewage disposal systems is expected to cause an increased nitrate contaminant load.

Tracing the influence of sewage nitrogen in a coastal ecosystem using stable nitrogen isotopes
Article Abstract:
Isotopes are different forms of chemical element that has the same number of protons but different number of neutrons with different atomic masses that could be quantified on mass spectrometer. Ecological research use stable isotopes as chemical makers to track the origin, pathways, and fate of organic matter.
