Long-term interactions between migratory Caribou, wildfires and Nunavik Hunters inferred from tree rings

Article Abstract:

The long term trends of caribou activity based on a novel approach using tree-ring data trampling scars produced by caribou hooves in the extensive trails distributed over the summer and winter ranges of the Riviere-aux-Feuilles herd were used to test caribou decline hypothesis associated with native fire and harvesting. Results show that only exceptionally large fires may have a minor, short-lived impact on caribou migrations but not on caribou numbers.

A 400-year tree-ring chronology from the tropical treeline of North America

Article Abstract:

North American tropical pine trees have been examined through tree-ring samples ranging from 1600 to 1997. The data suggest summer monsoon precipitation is the most significant dendroclimatic signal, along with low growth between 1913 and 1914 due to the Volcan de Colima eruption.

The tree-ring chemistry of declining sugar maple in central Ontario, Canada

Article Abstract:

Sugar maple populations in central Ontario are displaying symptoms of decline. Tree-ring width is getting smaller, accompanied by losses of calcium, manganese, and magnesium in soil nutrients.
