Article Abstract:
Industrialization has profoundly affected the rural population. Economic development focused on the use of modern technologies and equipment in agriculture thus displacing majority of farmers and their families. Financial difficulties forced them to migrate to the cities, resulting to the collapse of small-scale businesses in the countryside and the breakdown of community and family relationships. However, rich countries have developed strategies to curb urban migration and proved successful with it too. But the ongoing GATT talks could greatly alter the positive developments in the rural area.

Grim sower, grim harvest
Article Abstract:
The ongoing civil war in Somalia is imperilling the country's hope for agricultural recovery. The security problems and brought about by the war and drought has led to lack of harvest ofonce agriculturally productive areas. For a country largely dependent on livestock sales, the warfare has also caused the cutoff of letters of credit from livestock importers and almost all veterinary drug supplies. Its rural infrastructure has also been severely affected by the looting and destruction commited by government soldiers, rebels and warring clan members.
