Reevaluation of ENCORE: support for the eutrophication threshold model for coral reefs

Article Abstract:

The Enrichment of Nutrients on Coral Reefs Experiment (ENCORE) on One Tree Island Reef (OTIR) has indicated that the increased nutrient loads at coral reefs will not have any effect on the algal growth rates and on the associated effects that increased algal growth might have on the functioning and stability of coral reefs. The conclusion of ENCORE is contrary to the fact that there was prolific macroalgal growth on the walls and crests of the experimental microatolls by the end of ENCORE.

Immigration: a potential time bomb under the integration of conservation and development

Article Abstract:

Immigration to Cameroon's Waza-Logone region is complicating conservation efforts under the Integrated Conservation and Development Projects (ICDP) model. Since ICDPs do not incorporate demographic monitoring, human encroachment is inadequately addressed. Suggestions for regional land-use planning that discourage development and immigration are presented.
