An overview is presented on timber and nontimber extraction levels in the production of forest products by rural people in the Peruvian Amazon region, along with the resulting environmental impact. The article also examines the need for socioeconomic research, balancing rural livelihood requisites and ecological mitigation, before land-use policy changes are developed and implemented.
