The potential contribution of pixel-based canopy change information to stand-based forest management in the northern US
Article Abstract:
A study of the methods used to detect changes in the forest canopy in north central Minnesota shows that digital monitoring is able to detect changes in the forest stands and pixel based change information provides useful sub-stand information about canopy changes. A stand is a piece of land in which conditions do not change with respect to specific management objectives. The change maps formed by Landsat Thematic Mapper show that the variations in the data obtained from digital change classification are not errors, but reflect sub-stand information that can either be incorporated into the study or corrected for.

Depopulation, land-use change and landscape transformation in the French Massif Central
Article Abstract:
The gradual depopulation of farms in the French Massif Central presents a threat to proponents of sustained economic development in the area. Depopulation contributes to increased forest growth, reducing the region's capacity to be economically productive. Tourism and outdoor recreation are possible methods of halting and reversing depopulation.

Life in the land of the midnight sun: are northern lizards adapted to longer days?
Article Abstract:
The growth rate in juvenile common lizards(Lacerta vivipara) from northern and southern Sweden, relative to long and short day length, is investigated. Lizards experiencing long days show an increase in growth rate and higher endurance at low temperatures.
