The struggle for a cleaner urban environment: water pollution in Malmo, 1850-1911
Article Abstract:
The article examines the effects of discharging wastewater into the Sound of Oresund by Malmo, Sweden, during the 1800s, which shifted the issue of water pollution from a local arena to one involving a larger area of the Baltic Sea. Adoption of water-closet toilets and the construction of a sewerage system during the turn of the 20th century dramatically improved water quality.

The tail feathers of osprey nestlings (Pandion haliaetus L.) as indicators of change in mercury load in the environment of southern Sweden (1969-1998):
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the tail feathers of 104 osprey nestlings (Pandion haliaetus L.) from Lake Asnen, southern Sweden, was undertaken for total mercury and selenium content. Results indicate that the bioaccumulated quantity of selenium that is thought to be protective for the organisms against the toxic effects of mercury is somewhat insufficient to bind all body mercury.
