The use of butterflyfishes (Chaetondontidae) as bio-indicators of habitat structure and human disturbance

Article Abstract:

Butterfly fish may be reliable bio-indicators in assessing the quality of habitat structure in Sri Lanka. Species diversity and population sizes have been studied, and coral reefs in sanctuaries when compared with areas suffering habitat destruction show fewer depauperate fauna with higher densities and diversity. Use of butterfly fish for habitat assessment remains controversial, and may not be globally applicable.

Environmental economics of coral reef destruction in Sri Lanka

Article Abstract:

Coral reefs form a significant economic resource for people in Sri Lanka. Coral mining produces less net benefits than short-term economic value, contributing to decreased tourism and increased erosion. Interior regions offer a strong market for mined coral, since it produces more short-term income than agriculture and fishing. Sri Lankan legislation banning coral mining is in the nation's long-term interests.

Coral and rock reef habitats in southern Sri Lanka: patterns in the distribution of coral communities

Article Abstract:

Rock and coral reefs in Sri Lanka are affected by a range of factors. The coral reefs were made of nearly 50% live coral cover, while rock reefs contained sparse colonies of different coral species and were dominated by rocky outcrops and large boulders. Those reefs nearest shore have been significantly altered by reef walking, boating, fishing, snorkeling, sedimentation and pollution.
