"This situation could go on for a long time..." (interview with Georgia Shaver, senior desk officer for the World Food Programme East and Southern Africa division) (Interview)

Article Abstract:

An interview with World Food Programme (WFP) East and Southern Africa Division Senior Desk officer Georgia Shaver revealed the serious security problems in Somalia which has been impeding its food aid operations. It was learned that in the beginning of 1992,WFP lost 16,000 tons of food aid through looting. To address this problem, the WFP along with non-governmental organizations started the 'market sales scheme'whereby food commodities are sold through traders based in the country. With regards to the operations' timetable, WFP claimed that there is no time span since the situation could endure for an unforeseeable length of time.

Biting the hand that feeds

Article Abstract:

The Bantus suffer the worst lot in famine-ridden Somalia because they are being discriminated against by Somali groups who feel that they are superior to the Bantus. Food aid to the Bantus and other farming people have been appropriated by ethnically-superior Somalis. The Bantus in the Jubba and Shebelli valleys, where most of the country's arable land are located have suffered because this area has been the site of the violent confrontations between Pres Siad Barre and the Hawiye and Darod armies. Relief workers have found it difficult to reach Bantus in these areas because of the interference of other Somalis.

"A design science with an ethic." (permaculture) (Interview)

Article Abstract:

Australian agronomist Bill Mollison described the integrated farming concept called 'permaculture' which he developed together with David Holmgren. According to Mollisson, permaculture is a design science that embraces all areas of human settlement, not only agriculture. It allows for therestoration of native species and damaged environment by beginning with a principle of earth care and emphasizing people care. Permaculture is different from organic agriculture as the latter is insufficient. Presently, over 100,000farmers worldwide have switched to permaculture.
