Urban ecological systems: linking terrestrial ecological, physical, and socioeconomic components of metropolitan areas

Article Abstract:

Linking terrestrial ecological, physical, and socioeconomic components of metropolitan areas is discussed in reviewing key aspects of disparate literatures on terrestrial urban systems from the ecology perspective. An open definition of urban systems that accounts for the exchanges of material and influence between cities and surrounding landscapes is emphasized. Sophisticated understanding of spatial dimensions of social differentiation is paralleled in concepts/data on ecology patch dynamics. It sets the stage for understanding of urban ecosystems. Linkages are seen in the human ecosystem framework.
