Vertical flux and particulate/water dynamics of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the open Baltic Sea

Article Abstract:

Studies on sediments, suspended particles and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the Baltic Sea indicate that the lipid- and carbon-normalized PCB concentrations are degraded during sediment settling, while hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) remain within the settling particles. This finding suggests that concentrations of HOCs may be significantly underestimated if a single equation is used to estimate equilibrium.

Urban impact in the history of water quality in the Stockholm Archipelago

Article Abstract:

The article traces changes to Baltic Sea water quality in the archipelago region of Stockholm, Sweden, from the turn of the 20th century to the present. Data show that eutrophication prevailed until the beginning of the 1990s, when water quality improved significantly. This improvement is attributed to more stringent wastewater treatment measures.

The meltdown of biogeographical peculiarities of the Baltic Sea: the interaction of natural and man-made processes

Article Abstract:

The article examines on the impact of eutrophication, non-native species, and a temporary deep-basin oxygen deficit on the Baltic Sea's biogeography. Research shows that these factors are reducing the Baltic's level of biodiversity.
