A light, bright future
Article Abstract:
Kevin Moore, GM's secondary aluminum commodity manager, said the amount of aluminum used by the company could rise to 850 pounds per vehicle. GM currently uses 290 pounds of 290 pounds of aluminum, with 76% in the form of castings such as wheel rims and engine and transmission castings. Moore said greater use of aluminum may become a reality when engine parts are converted to aluminum. He admits, however, that engineers may be reluctant to convert from steel to aluminum.

Paper prices hold steady
Article Abstract:
The price of paper may remain unchanged during Apr 2000, although there has been pressure to reduce prices of the higher grades. The prices of sorted white ledger, office pack and coated book stock have declined slightly, but movement and demand for the products are still satisfactory. The prices of these grades have scaled back by $10 to $20 per ton in Mar 2000, and may be slashed by another $10 per ton in the following month.

Low grades continue to flourish
Article Abstract:
The export of old corrugated containers (OCC), old newspapers and mixed paper from the US continues to be fueled by the demands of the Pacific Rim nations. This has caused offshore prices for OCC to move beyond the $140 per ton level and reach as high as $180 per ton according to some vendors in the US West Coast. Booking passage into container ships, a problem reported by shippers in Apr 2000, has reportedly eased a little.
