C&D markets look forward
Article Abstract:
Strong market demand for aggregates, mulch and other products made from processed concrete and reclaimed asphalt (C and D) is expected to continue throughout 2000. Favorable market condition is fueled by the continuing expansion of the economy. Hence, C and D recyclers are expected to concentrate on improving production techniques instead of looking for purchasers of their processed products.

A year to forget
Article Abstract:
The dumping of steel by Asian manufacturers into the US market has caused prices of scrap metals to drop in 1998. Price of heavy melting scrap plummeted from a high of $138.33 per ton in Oct 1997 to $82 per ton in Oct 1998. The precipituous drop eventually affected auto shredding, resulting in a situation where auto owners were not even willing to sell scrap. Consolidation, meanwhile, slackened in the second half of 1998 as aggressive buyers began to shift their focus away from acquisitions towards internal operations.

Same tired story?
Article Abstract:
Disposal of scrap tires may become less of a problem in the near future as smaller end markets for waste tires are developed. Tire-derived fuel may finally become a significant end market for scrap tires with the advent of deregulation in the power industry. Other end markets are civil engineering applications and a wide array of industrial and consumer products ranging from livestock feeders and plastic pallets to highway signs and garbage pail lids.
