Food residuals composting in the U.S
Article Abstract:
The traditional windrow method is the most commonly used method of transforming food residuals into compost in the US, according to BioCycle magazine's 1999 Food Residuals Composting survey, which covers 43 food residual projects. In general, private projects have larger throughputs than public facilities. Most institutional/commercial/industrial (ICI) projects have only been operating for a few years, but some sites date back to the 1980s. Some 24 of the 43 full-scale ICI facilities have grinding systems.

Mixing paper pulp with fish residuals
Article Abstract:
Fish residuals taken from commercial fish cleaning stations are used to process compost by combining them with unbleached paper pulp sludge and tree trimmings in the County of Oswego, New York. The innards are mixed with unbleached paper pulp sludge in static piles, and this pulp sludge is again combined with tree trimmings in a 1:1 ratio. The processing takes 18 months, by the end of which the piles of sludge are odorless and ready for use.
