Putting the squeeze on
Article Abstract:
Scrap metals are baled for easier shipment and maximized shredder production, particularly for ferrous metals. Two shreddable scrap formats are highly in demand by operators who seek the highest-volume strategies obtainable of feeding their machines. These formats include compressed scrap:flattened automobiles and soft shredder logs. The amount of ferrous scrap that is being processed and melted at mills and foundries has resulted in the creation of compression equipment that is specifically designed for ferrous scraps. The logs are popular with shredder operators due to their easy handling.

Crashing the scrap party
Article Abstract:
Ferrous scrap producers have benefited from a boom in the electric arc furnace mini-mill sector of the North American steel industry. How long will this continue, however, is open to debate as more mini-mill operators are turning to ferrous scrap substitutes such as direct reduced iron (DRI) or technologies that lessen their dependence on ferrous scrap. World DRI production, for instance, has increased seven-fold to more than 36 million metric tons in 1997 from five million metric tons in 1978.

On a roll
Article Abstract:
Tire recylcing has never been considered a lucrative business as the physical process of recyling tires and producing marketable secondary commodities has at best been a challenging endeavor. However, persistence and creative research efforts by entrepreneurs in this business appear to be finally bearing fruit with the development of a number of established techniques as well as sustained progress in demand within the industry. Tire-derived fuel users remain the most consistent and largest buyers of scrap tires.
