Front and center with biowaste: Source separated collection of household organics and tunnel technology are critical components of sustainable management in the Helsinki, Finland area
Article Abstract:
Around 40% of municipal solid waste from the Greater Helsinki area is recycled. The Helsinki Metropolitan Area Council (YTV) aims to reduce community waste to landfill 5% by 2000, with a target of 15% by 2005. In the Helsinki Metropolitan Area a significant amount of household organics are separated and composted. The YTV-owned Ammassuo waste handling center started up in 1987, and the composting plant composts separately collected biowaste.

Wastepaper improves biowaste composting
Article Abstract:
The presented definition of Biowaste poses problems in compost processing. Too much moisture and too little solid content results in the common putrid smell of garbage and the poor quality of end-products dictated by the narrow definition. The meaning of biowaste should therefore. Redifination can also help encourage more sectors to make use of more matirials that can be discarded through natural microbiological processes.

Composting biowaste in Austria
Article Abstract:
In Austria, it is expected that one million tons of household biowaste and one million tons of yard trimming will be collected this year through the establishment of procedures and the amendment of the Austrian Waste Management law in 1992. About 300 composting plants with a capacity of more than 50 tons/year and 200 composting plants for pure yard trimming with a capacity of 415 tons/year are already operating.
